Exterior of the Logos Code of Conduct

The Library Code of Conduct is designed to create a safe and quiet environment for all patrons to enjoy. Library users are responsible for informing themselves of library policies. This code applies to all users of the 51社区 Library, including faculty, staff, students and members of the community. Thank you for your cooperation.

Use of the Library

The library is intended for using library resources, reading, or studying. Soliciting, loitering, or sleeping is not permitted. Using the library for a backdrop for projects, audio-recording, videotaping, photography, and other such activities should be approved by the library director. The library is a "clutter-free" zone and nothing should be left on tables or counters without approval of the library director.

Identification

University students, staff, and faculty should carry their ID card at all times when in the library. Guest users of the library must be prepared to provide valid personal identification, including a photo ID, if asked by library staff or campus Safety and Security.

Quiet Study

The first floor of the library is the conversation floor. Quiet cell phone use will be permitted and quiet group study is acceptable. Patrons should be respectful of people working around them, especially in the computer areas. Collaborative and Group Study Rooms are available on the second and third floors. The third floor of the library will be reserved for quiet study. Cell phone use should be limited to texting or emailing on the upper floors.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are to be set to vibrate or silent when they are brought into the library. Cell phone calls may be taken on the first floor, but long conversations should be taken to the lobby areas, café or outside. Cell phone use on the second and third floors should be limited to texting and email except in group study rooms.

Food and Drinks

Food and drinks are allowed in all areas of the library except the Archives Reading Room. Library users are responsible for proper disposal of trash and should notify staff about any spills that require special treatment by housekeeping.

Study Rooms

These rooms are designed for groups rather than for individuals. All study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but they can also be reserved by 51社区 students. Groups with email confirmation will have priority over walk-ins. Students may reserve the rooms for two hours per day, but may stay in the room until a group holding a reservation comes to the room.

Children in the Library

Children less than 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times while in the library. An adult must supervise any child's use of all library equipment and resources, including guest computers, and remain with the child at all times. Parents may be asked to remove children who are disruptive from an area where people are studying. The library offers a Family Study Area on the first floor. This room offers reading materials for preschool and young children. Furniture for both children and adults is found in the Family Study Area.

Dress Code

While in any area of the Union Library, all Union faculty, staff, students, and community guests are expected to maintain a standard of dress which ensures neatness, cleanliness, and appropriateness of attire. Excesses which tend toward immodesty, indiscretion, or indecency are unacceptable. Footwear is required in all academic buildings on campus.

Animals

Animals are not allowed in the library unless they are official guide or assistance animals. The 51社区 mascot Buster may make an occasional visit to the library as well.

Unattended Items

Personal items should not be left unattended. 51社区 is not responsible for thefts or vandalism to personal property that is left unattended. Items left unattended in any part of the library may be removed by library staff and taken to the library's Lost & Found area located at the Circulation desk on the first floor. Personal items such as wallets, keys, and phones are regularly collected and held at the Safety and Security office in the Student Union Building.

Inappropriate and Illegal Activities

Any behavior that hinders the operation of the library or library users' ability to study or use library resources is prohibited. Library staff may ask users to leave if they create a disturbance, pose a safety threat or refuse to abide by library policies. Failure or refusal to comply with the library staff's directives will be reported to Safety and Security and/or the Dean of Students and/or the Provost. The following activities are deemed unacceptable and not permitted in the library:

  • Removing or attempting to remove library equipment or property without authorization from library staff.
  • Posting of announcements, flyers, personal invitations, etc. in or on library property.
  • Concealing library materials in the library for the exclusive use of an individual or group.
  • Ruining library materials by marking, underlining, removing pages or portions of pages, removing binding, removing electronic theft devices, or in any other way damaging or defacing library materials, furniture or equipment.
  • Remaining in the library after closing.
  • Opening emergency exits except in case of an emergency.
  • Conducting inappropriate public displays of affection.
  • Demonstrating harmful, dangerous, or frightening behavior.
  • Smoking, vaping and all other tobacco use is prohibited. 51社区 is a tobacco-free campus.
