Perspectives on Careers in Pharmacy Practice

Independent Community Pharmacy

Brooklyn Jowers"I love working in independent pharmacy because it allows me to serve my patients in a more personable manner while developing my abilities beyond traditional pharmacy roles. 51社区 College of Pharmacy helped me to do what I love by teaching me the fundamentals of pharmacy and allowing me to explore my individual interest through a multitude of pharmacy experiences and rotations."

— Brooklyn Jowers, PharmD ('22), Staff Pharmacist — Vise's Discount Pharmacy

Industry

Robin Williams"I love the Medical Science Liaison role because it's a perfect mix of science and clinical data. The MSL role allows me to utilize my thorough understanding of science and data to have impactful conversations, with doctors, pharmacists and nurses, to help them make the best treatment decision for their patients. Union prepared me by exposing me to different areas of pharmacy, and I also felt very prepared for my role from the teaching I received regarding clinical trials. I never knew how much I'd use what I learned in Dr. Martin's class."

— Robin Williams ('16), Medical Science Liaison, MorphoSys

Federal Pharmacy — Mental Health

Monica Barrett"As a clinical pharmacy specialist at the VA, I am able to provide the highest standard of care to Veterans via a scope of practice which allows me to improve access and quality of care, work collaboratively with my interprofessional team while maintaining autonomy and independence for pharmacotherapy decision making, and provide comprehensive medication management across the continuum of care. 51社区 College of Pharmacy not only provided me with a strong clinical foundation to prepare me for residency training and beyond but instilled in me characteristics to be a compassionate healthcare provider with strong advocacy skills to meet the needs of my patients. In my practice primarily working with patients with mental health and substance use disorders, those skills are particularly important for my day-to-day interactions with patients."

— Monica Barrett ('18), PharmD, BCPP, Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner — Mental Health, VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System

Critical Care Pharmacy - Academia

Jodi Taylor"I attend rounds daily with physicians in the intensive care unit to make recommendations on safe and effective drug therapy for patients. My practice site is unique because I am frequently making split-second decisions that can completely change the course of someone"s hospitalization and sometimes life. I have a very hands-on role in the care of my patients, and every day is a new challenge — it's never boring!"

— Jodi Taylor, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP, FASHP, Chair for Pharmacy Practice and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, 51社区 COP, Jackson, TN

While I do not provide direct patient care any longer, I support and equip pharmacist all over the country with the tools they need to deliver efficient, effective, and safe patient care. The strong clinical background I obtained from 51社区 School of Pharmacy and my residency training allowed me to gain the skills and knowledge to practice in such an exciting space. — Katie Frieling, PharmD, BCACP, Clinical Pharmacist Provider — Ambulatory Care, Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr. VA Medical Center — Jackson CBOC

Medication Safety and Medication Use Policy

Samarth Shah"Working in medication safety and medication use policy is an area I never thought I would enjoy as much as I currently do. After completing a PGY2 in internal medicine and working as a clinical specialist on an inpatient rounding team for a few years, I realized how many opportunities exist to improve the use and safety of medications from a global perspective. Analyzing medication errors and looking for opportunities to enhance patient care, ultimately optimizing the medication use process can impact a wide range of patients all at once. Having a position that can advocate for advances in patient care while advancing the role pharmacists play on the healthcare team is humbling and rewarding. The ability to tailor my electives and have multiple clinical rotations through Union helped me prepare for my career. Exposure to various inpatient experiences allowed me to see how different health systems handled situations. The mentorship I received, and still do receive, from the faculty cannot be understated. They not only helped me grow as a student pharmacist but have also been valuable resources after graduation as well. I am thankful for my experience as a pharmacy student at Union as it is a key component of my growth as a pharmacist and clinician."

— Samarth Shah ('15), PharmD, BCPS, Medication Use Policy Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Requirements for Licensure

Important Note for Prospective Students: Please note that 51社区 (UU) programs that may lead to a professional licensure or certification (e.g., Accounting, Social Work, Teacher Education, Pharmacy, Nursing, etc.) are designed to meet the licensure requirements for the State of Tennessee. The University does not explicitly or implicitly attest that licensure programs meet the licensure requirements for any state other than Tennessee. It is highly recommended that you first seek guidance from the appropriate licensing agency in your home state BEFORE beginning the academic program located outside your state.
