Frequently Asked Questions for Students

  • Should I tell about my disability on my application to college?
You are not required to disclose your disability at any time and the college is prohibited by Federal law from asking you about a disability on the application form. 51社区 will not discriminate against you due to your status as a disabled individual. If you choose not to disclose your disability during the application process, we encourage you to do so very soon after you have been admitted to 51社区. By doing this, the Office of Disability Services will be able to best support your needs as you enter and transition into a college setting.
  • What kinds of accommodations are offered ?
Accommodations are individualized to address specific functional limitations resulting from a disability. Examples of common, reasonable accommodations include, but are not limited to:
    • Reduced Testing Environment
    • Extended Testing Time
    • Note taking support
  • How do I register with the Office of Disability Services at 51社区?
You can request accommodations online. For more information on how to secure your UU email and password, please visit the Information Technology website. In addition, documentation from a qualified professional diagnosing the disability may be required. Please see Requesting Accommodations for more information.
  • When should I register and request academic accommodations ?
Although you may request an academic accommodation from 51社区 at any time, you should request it as soon as possible. Some academic accommodations may take more time to provide than others. We strongly encourage new students with disabilities to register the summer before they arrive, ideally by June 1st.
  • If I register with the Office of Disability Services, will it show up on my academic record?
No, privacy is a top priority. A registered disability will not appear on any transcripts, grade reports, or diplomas.
  • As a student with a disability leaving high school and entering a university, will I see differences in my rights and how they are addressed?
Yes, unlike high school, college students with disabilities are required to proactively seek out accommodations from the Office of Disability Services. The responsibility to provide appropriate academic accommodations, after a student properly registers with the Office of Disability Services, still belongs to the university. These accommodations may differ from those provided during K-12 because a university must ensure that accommodations do not fundamentally alter any course.
  • What are my responsibilities every semester in order to receive accommodations ?
As a student with a disability, you are responsible for initially registering with the Office of Disability Services before your first semester, ideally by June 1st. After the initial semester, you will need to fill out a Request for Letter of Accommodations at the beginning of every semester. You will then be responsible for emailing your instructors and attaching the letter of accommodation. Use the template below to assist in writing your instructors concerning accommodations.

    Dear Professor Blank,

My name is John Doe and I will be taking your Introduction to Chemistry (CHEM 111) course this coming Fall 2018. This class is held on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00am to 9:00. I am writing you concerning my approved accommodations through the Office of Disability Services. I have attached a formal letter, provided by the Office of Disability Services, disclosing my accommodations for this course. If you have any questions or concern, I would be happy to set up a meeting during your scheduled office hours to discuss the details of the letter and answer any questions you may have concerning the accommodations. I am looking forward to a productive and successful semester.

    John Doe

  • Who will communicate to my instructors that I have accommodations ?
You have the responsibility of communicating to your instructors about needed accommodations. Students are responsible for requesting a Letter of Accommodation at the beginning of each semester. The Director of Disability Services will email the student with an attached letter stating the approved accommodations. Students are then responsible for emailing their instructors and attaching the letter of accommodation. The letter of accommodation acts to facilitate a discussion between you and your instructor.
  • I have a temporary disability. Can you help me? What services might be available ?
Services for students who are temporarily disabled are available. The application process is the same. For students who have suffered a concussion, the process is slightly different. Please consult the concussion policy in the ODS Policies and Procedures manual for more information.
  • I have a documented disability that may prevent me from going to class .
The attendance policy is determined by each instructor and absence from class cannot be excused as an accommodation since it fundamentally alters the course. We may be able to request leniency on attendance policies advising that your disability may impact attendance. How much leniency and how to confirm that absences are disability-related should be discussed with each faculty member each semester.
  • What do I do if I am taking summer classes and will need to receive accommodations ?
As soon as you know you are taking classes in the summer at 51社区, request a letter of accommodation through the office website. If you have not yet registered with the Office of Disability Services please do so as soon as possible so that the Director can process the application and documentation in a timely manner. Please keep in mind that some accommodations take additional time to coordinate. If you take a course off campus, accommodations will be provided by the host college/university.
