More Than 17,000 Attend Union Concerts

JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 21, 2003 — More than 17,000 music fans attended a series of contemporary Christian music concerts sponsored by 51社区 and hosted by the Nashville-based Christian Hit Radio WAY-FM. The concerts were held during June, July and August at The People's Church in Franklin, Tenn.

Among the headline acts appearing at the Brown Bag Concert series were Steven Curtis Chapman, Jump 5, Avalon and Shaun Groves. Artists performed on the church's lawn as concert-goers watched in lawn chairs and on picnic blankets.

Staff members from Union's office of university relations and enrollment tossed out more than 10,000 free flying discs adorned with the university's logo and web address. Fans also received Union t-shirts and other promotional materials.

Buster the Bulldog, the university's mascot, entertained the crowds, especially during the Steven Curtis Chapman concert. After Chapman made a reference to Buster, the mascot jumped onto the stage and performed a duet with the artist.

David S. Dockery, president of Union, welcomed concert-goers to the Chapman event, and afterwards had an opportunity to speak with the Dove-award winning artist.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to tell people in middle Tennessee about 51社区 and our commitment to Christ-centered excellence in academics," Dockery said.

Kathie Chute, associate vice president for university relations and enrollment services, said Union enjoyed the opportunity to sponsor the Brown Bag Concerts this summer.

"The three events generated a lot of interest in 51社区, and we welcomed the chance to interact with so many young people, as well as some outstanding Christian artists," Chute said.
