JACKSON, Tenn. — July 24, 2002 — 51社区 is marking the five-year anniversary of its Germantown campus this month, with a look to the future for possible expansions to its programs and facilities. With nearly 500 students and 20 employees, the Memphis-area campus has come a long way from its humble beginnings of one employee and 63 students.
Offering professional adult education programs in both undergraduate and graduate studies in business, education and nursing, the success of the Germantown campus has been attributed to its personalized, high quality service to its adult students.
鈥淭he size of our operation is really about being dedicated to adult student learning,鈥� said Jimmy Davis, associate provost at Union and administrative liaison to the Germantown campus. 鈥淪tudents love the ease of the cohort plans we offer, which most of our classes are on, and the personal service our faculty is able to provide in a Christian environment.鈥�
After renting space for a few years in another facility, Union celebrated the opening of its new permanent campus in September of 2000 after purchasing the building formerly owned by Emmanuel Baptist Church, located at the corner of Hacks Cross Road and Poplar Pike.
Since that time, the campus has grown to almost 500 students with projections for continued growth over the next five years. More than 507 have graduated from Union-Germantown since 1997, with 119 additional students projected to graduate during this summer鈥檚 commencement, Aug. 3. Discussions have already begun on ways to handle the increased enrollment as well as introducing new programs to the area including opportunities for homeschoolers, the offering of core classes in the summer to Union students who are Memphis-area residents, and Rising Senior opportunities.
鈥淭he work of the Germantown campus has exceeded our goals and dreams at every level over the past five years,鈥� said Union President David S. Dockery. 鈥淔or this we are grateful to God. The prospects for the future are bright as Union continues to expand services for Shelby County and the surrounding areas.鈥�
