JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 11, 2021 — 51 Theatre will perform the historical drama “Decision Height,” based on the stories of female pilots during World War II, Nov. 12-16 at the W.D. Powell Theater.
Crista Wilhite, director for “Decision Height,” said the play shares the untold story of World War II veterans who answered the call to serve their country. As an all-female theater cast, “Decision Height” celebrates history, sisterhood and the importance of community.
“This play is about life and connection,” Wilhite said. “And all of the beauty and tragedy within that — and the beauty within the tragedy of that.”
Mary Hardy, junior theater and film studies major at Union, leads the performance as Virginia Hascall, a young woman who left her home and fiancée to become a Women Airforce Service Pilot. Hardy said performing with an all-female cast has taught her the value of friendship in new ways.
“I have always felt a sense of community in the theater department, but it’s been fun seeing the entire cast support and grow closer together,” Hardy said. “It’s a reminder how much you need other people in your life, no matter if you’re related to them or not.”
Wilhite said at each rehearsal, she is constantly blown away by the talent of the Union performers, and through “Decision Height,” she hopes the audience feels the strength and emotion of these women.
In addition to the theatre production, Janna Chance, associate professor of English, will host a discussion after Saturday's performance when the audience can ask questions and think critically about the play’s core theme and message.
Due to mature themes, Wilhite advised for parental guidance as some material may not be suitable for young children.
