JACKSON, Tenn. — April 24, 2020 — Hal Poe’s book on the early years of C.S. Lewis, “Becoming C.S. Lewis: A Biography of Young Jack Lewis (1898-1918),” has been named as a finalist for a 2020 Christian Book Award.
The Christian Book Awards are presented annually to books in 12 different categories. Poe’s book is a finalist in the biography category. The winners will be announced May 5.
“It is a great honor to be named a finalist for the Christian Book Award,” said Poe, the Charles Colson Professor of Faith and Culture at Union. “I am glad that this honor will allow others to see the kind of work we all do at Union.”
Published by Crossway, Poe’s book takes an in-depth look at Lewis’ early life that is largely overlooked in other biographies. It examines Lewis’ childhood interests and experiences, such as the death of his mother; being sent from Ireland to English boarding schools (that he hated); being bullied and withdrawing from social life; developing a love of reading; his love of walking outdoors and observing the landscapes; and his captivation with castles and old churches.
The book is the first in a trilogy that Poe is contracted to write. The other two books forthcoming are “The Making of C.S. Lewis: From Atheist to Apologist (1918-1945)” and “The Completion of C.S. Lewis: From Bachelor to Widower (1945-1963).” “Becoming C.S. Lewis” is available for purchase on .
