JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 7, 2002 — 51社区鈥檚 College of Arts and Sciences will hold a series of interdisciplinary classes during the month of January offering a variety of perspectives on the subject of Islam. Topics will include Islamic history, theology, architecture, literature, science, math, economics, culture and politics.
According to Ann Livingstone, associate professor of political science, the series of lectures 鈥渉elps to soften the lines among the disciplines. It鈥檚 going to be a wonderful exchange of ideas, reactions and interdisciplinary thinking.鈥�
While almost 20 students are taking the winter course for credit, the community is invited to attend the class lectures that will be offered by the various participating faculty, on a non-credit basis. Each class will be from 6-10 p.m., with the first class beginning Tuesday, Jan.8 and ending with a panel discussion on Jan. 30.
Dates for the lectures are as follows:
January 8 - The Role of the Liberal Arts in the University, Dr. Jean-Marie Walls;
The History and Religion of Islam, Dr. Greg Thornbury and Dr. Randall Bush.
January 15 - The Literature of Islam, Dr. Gavin Richardson;
The Architecture of Islam, Dr. Don Van.
January 22 - The Maths/Science of Islam, Dr. Matt Lunsford;
The Economics of Islam, Dr. Walton Padelford.
January 29 - The Culture of Islam, Dr. Cindy Jayne;
The Politics of Islam, Dr. Ann Livingstone.
January 30 - Panel Discussion, all participating faculty.
