JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 18, 2013 — The life and thought of C.S. Lewis will be the topic for the next Town and Gown series at 51社区 on Monday evenings from Oct. 21-Nov. 18.
The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The classes are free and open to the public.
Almost 50 years after his death, Lewis continues to be one of the most recognized and highly regarded Christian apologists. This series of lectures addresses Lewis鈥� thought in several areas of life and learning, such as science, politics, mathematics, education, philosophy, history and the imagination.
All sessions will be held in the Carl Grant Events Center from 6-8:45 p.m., with the second session beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The schedule for the series is:
- Oct. 21: 鈥淐.S. Lewis and Imagination,鈥� with Hal Poe, Charles Colson Professor of Faith and Culture at Union, followed by 鈥淐.S. Lewis and Literature: Why Reading Broadly Matters,鈥� with Gene Fant, executive vice president for academic administration.
- Oct. 28: Jennifer Gruenke, professor of biology, who will discuss Lewis鈥� view of science and what he would think about the intelligent design movement, followed by 鈥淐.S. Lewis and the Recovery of True Education,鈥� with Brad Green, associate professor of Christian thought and tradition.
- Nov. 4: 鈥淏ridges and Fords: Lewis on History,鈥� with David Thomas, professor of history, followed by 鈥淲atchful Dragons and the Baptized Imagination,鈥� with Micah Watson, associate professor of political science.
- Nov. 11: 鈥淭he Mathematical Mind of C.S. Lewis,鈥� with Matt Lunsford, professor of mathematics, followed by 鈥淭he Lewis-Anscombe Debate: Milieu, Mutations and Mathematics,鈥� with Russ Howell, professor of mathematics and holder of the Kathleen Smith Chair of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at Westmont College.
- Nov. 18: 鈥淢ere Epistemology: Christian Wisdom about Knowing from C.S. Lewis,鈥� with Justin Barnard, associate dean in the Institute for Intellectual Discipleship at Union.
