JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 13, 2013 — Philip Jenkins, an award-winning author who specializes in global Christianity, will speak at 51社区 Oct. 1 at the 17th annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series.
Jenkins is distinguished professor of history at Baylor University and co-director for the Program on Historical Studies of Religion in Baylor鈥檚 Institute for Studies of Religion. He is also Emeritus Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Humanities at Pennsylvania State University.
Jenkins is the author of 24 books, including 鈥淭he New Faces of Christianity,鈥� which won the 2006 Theologos Award for the Association of Theological Booksellers best academic book and the 2007 Christianity Today Book Award for the best work in missions and global affairs. Some of his other books include 鈥淭he Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity,鈥� 鈥淛esus Wars,鈥� 鈥淭he Lost History of Christianity鈥� and 鈥淕od鈥檚 Continent.鈥�
A lecturer at more than 150 colleges, universities and seminaries in North America and Europe since 2003, Jenkins completed his doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 1978.
His main address at Union, 鈥淔rom Angels to Armageddon: The First World War as a Global Religious Revolution,鈥� will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. It is free and open to the public. He will address the Union community at 1:40 p.m. on 鈥淭he Lost History of Christianity鈥� in the Carl Grant Events Center.
