The next Town and Gown series at Union will address death and dying.

JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 27, 2013 — Death and dying will be the topic for the next Town and Gown series at 51社区 on Thursday evenings from Sept. 5-Oct. 3.

The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The classes are free and open to the public.

鈥淒eath is the most certain of events a person will ever face; everyone is going to die,鈥 said C. Ben Mitchell, Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy at Union. 鈥淵et most people don鈥檛 want to talk about it. The result is that we no longer know how to die well.鈥 Mitchell said the Town and Gown class would 鈥渕ine the rich veins of the Christian tradition to resurrect its wisdom about death and dying.鈥

Speakers for the series will include professionals such as physicians, nurses, morticians, ethicists, philosophers, theologians and musicians.

The schedule for the series is:

-- Sept. 5, 6 p.m.: Course introduction with Mitchell and Justin Barnard, associate professor of philosophy; 6:30 p.m.: 鈥淭he Ars Moriendi in Literature,鈥 with Scott Huelin, director of Union鈥檚 Honors Community; 8 p.m.: 鈥淢usic in Death and Dying,鈥 with Chris Matthews, associate professor of music.

-- Sept. 12, 6 p.m.: 鈥淭heology/Philosophy and Death,鈥 with Barnard; 8 p.m.: 鈥淓thics in Death and Dying,鈥 with Mitchell.

-- Sept. 19, 6 p.m.: 鈥淣ursing in Death and Dying,鈥 with Patricia Keene, professor of nursing; 8 p.m.: 鈥淟egal Issues in Death and Dying,鈥 with Greg Jordan, professor of business law and ethics.

-- Sept. 26, 6 p.m.: 鈥淢edical Issues in Death and Dying, with Dr. Clyde E. Smith of Hospice and Palliative Care; 8 p.m.: 鈥淔unerals, Cremation, Burial,鈥 with Robert Arrington of Arrington Funeral Home.

-- Oct. 3, 6 p.m.: 鈥淐are in Death and Dying,鈥 with LeighAnn Sutton of Hospice of West Tennessee.
