JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 4, 2010 — 51 is one of four institutions in Tennessee included in the new “College Access and Opportunity Guide” that highlights colleges and universities committed to academic rigor and accessibility.

The book includes profiles of 284 colleges that are committed to serving low-income, first-generation college-bound students.

“We are extremely thankful for the recognition of 51 among the 284 top colleges in the United States emphasizing access and opportunity,” Union President David S. Dockery said. “To be listed among Vanderbilt, Rhodes and Belmont as one of only four outstanding institutions in the state of Tennessee is remarkable.”

The guide specifically highlights such Union initiatives as the Rising High School Senior Program, minority student scholarships and preview days, the Hundley Center for Academic Enrichment, the Keystone Program (where specific students facing serious academic uncertainties receive specialized help) and other resources.

“The recognition underscores our commitment to top-flight academics for an ever-widening constituency of students,” Dockery said.
