JACKSON, Tenn. — Aug. 28, 2001 — 51社区鈥檚 distinguished faculty will have 12 new additions this year when classes begin Wed., Aug. 29. The recent additions were made in the departments and areas of Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Education, Christian Studies, English, Sports Medicine, Business, Biology, Communication Arts, and Music.
"The Fall 2001 class of new faculty at Union is a talented group of educators,鈥� said 51社区 Provost Carla Sanderson. 鈥淪ome bring research expertise while others bring years of experience in higher education. Each one brings to Union a fresh perspective and new approach that will compliment the work of our faculty body and stretch our students in exciting ways.鈥�

Don Van joins the Union faculty as Chair and Associate Professor of the university鈥檚 new Engineering program. Receiving both his bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 of science from the University of Illinois, Van also holds a master鈥檚 of science and his Ph.D. from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Most recently, he served as senior manager of environmental affairs at Pfizer, Inc.
Joining the Department of Computer Science as Assistant Professor is Union graduateJames Kirk, who received both his master鈥檚 in music and master鈥檚 in arts from Indiana University. Currently, he is completing his Ph.D. through the University of Louisville, where he has served as a lecturer since 1989.
Assistant Professor Michael Salazar comes to the Department of Chemistry from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he served as a postdoctoral researcher. A graduate from New Mexico State University, Salazar holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah.
Kenneth Newman will serve as Associate Professor to the Department of Education. A graduate of Union, he received a master's in education, a master's of arts and his doctorate from the University of Memphis. Since 1962, Newman has served as a teacher, librarian, and supervisor for Madison County Schools.
Ray Van Neste joins the Department of Christian Studies as an Assistant Professor. A Union graduate, Van Neste received his master鈥檚 of arts from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and will complete his Ph.D. requirements from the University of Aberdeen this fall, where he has served as a teaching assistant since 1998.
Joining the English Department as Assistant Professor, Patricia Hamilton comes to Union from the University of Georgia, where she received her Ph.D. while serving as an instructor and teaching assistant. A graduate of Biola University, Hamilton received her master鈥檚 of arts from California State University.
The latest member of the Physical Education, Wellness and Sports Department, Cliff Pawley will serve as Instructor of Sports Medicine. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, Pawley received his master鈥檚 in education from Northeast Louisiana University. He has previously served as director of Sports Medicine for Bay Minette Physical Therapy Services.
Kimberlee Keef is a Visiting Associate Professor for Union鈥檚 School of Business. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Keef received both her master鈥檚 and Ph.D. there as well, and most recently served as Chair and Director of Health Services and an Associate Professor at the University of New England.
David Harvey is a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Union this year. A graduate of the University of California, Harvey holds a master鈥檚 of arts from California State University. Harvey retired from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District in 1990.
Monica Pope, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Martin, will serve as a Visiting Instructor in the Biology Department. Pope recently completed her master鈥檚 of science degree at Murray State University.
An adjunct instructor at Union last year, Ashley Blair will serve in a full-time capacity this year as a Visiting Instructor of Communication Arts. A graduate of Union, Blair received her master鈥檚 of arts from the University of Memphis, where she worked as a training and development specialist.
Robert Burton will serve as an Adjunct Visiting Professor in the Department of Music. Burton, who formerly served as Professor of Conducting at Southwestern Seminary for more then 30 years, holds three degrees from Louisiana State University and a doctorate from Indiana University.
