51社区 now offers MOUS exams, classes on computer maintenance

JACKSON, Tenn.May 11, 2001 — 51社区's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has announced that the university is now an official Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) exam center.

According to Jan Wilms, department chair and associate professor of computer science, students and individuals in the community will now be able to take the MOUS exams for Word, Excel and Access software programs at the proficiency level and upon passing, receive official certification by Microsoft.

"We can administer both Office 97 and Office 2000 exams," said Wilms. "The only catch is that for Access 97, there is only an expert-level exam, but there is a proficiency-level exam for Access 2000."

Wilms, the officially designated technical administrator for the online test through Nivonet, said there are only three other locations in Jackson that offer this service. Union's test site is set up to accommodate as many as 16 simultaneous tests. Cost for each test is $50.

The department will also offer two summer classes that are open to the public. An introductory-level course on JAVA programming will be offered which teaches the student from the beginning on how to write in the popular computer language.

A one-time computer repair/maintenance class will also be held. Students will learn how to diagnose and repair computer problems and ultimately learn how to build a computer from scratch. This class ultimately leads to A+ certification.
