J.C. Watts – football
hero, youth pastor, and now a third-term congressman from Oklahoma,
recalls a time when God was very evident in Congress.
“I remember back in 1995. There were 73 of us – bright-eyed freshmen that wanted to change the world. We were at an impasse on the budget, weren’t sure what to do, and 15 to 17 of us gathered to figure out how to handle it, and which way we should vote. During those tense moments of soul searching, one of the members spoke up and said, ‘you know guys, I think back on the founding fathers and what they would have done, and I think they would have said, let’s pray.’ And then he asked me to lead the group in a word of prayer. "It’s times like that when you’re really thankful for those members who believe in a higher call, and a re not just driven by the next election but the faith that’s real to them. That was a pretty special moment to experience in that critical time in our nation’s history. Due to many of those decisions that were made in 1995, we’re experiencing an embarrassment of riches today in America. I think our faith and camaraderie among men and women of faith were very helpful in getting us through something like that." |
