Bryant to run for U.S. Senate

JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 19, 2006 — Former U.S. Rep. Ed Bryant, who serves 51社区 as special assistant to the president and as a lecturer in political science, has announced his plans to run for U.S. Senate.

Bryant on Jan. 17 picked up his petition from the Madison County Election Commission office. He is seeking the seat that will be vacated by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.

鈥淓d Bryant is a man of highest character devoted to the service of this community, our state and our nation,鈥 51社区 President David S. Dockery said. 鈥51社区 is thankful for his faithful efforts on our campus in behalf of our students and we pledge our solid support for him as he seeks a seat in the U.S. Senate.鈥

Bryant served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995-2003. He is currently an attorney with the Waldrop and Hall law firm in Jackson.

Bryant said many of the country鈥檚 foundational values are under attack, and if elected he will fight to defend such values as the right to life and the sanctity of marriage. 鈥淭hese times in America today are not business as usual times,鈥 Bryant said. 鈥淲e need people to be elected into very important offices like the U.S. Senate who have the qualifications and the experience and the proven conservative philosophy to represent Tennessee.鈥
