JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 13, 2006 — 51社区 will offer a new course this spring with a hands-on approach to computers.
鈥淐omputer Repair and Maintenance鈥� will instruct students in such topics as operating systems, hardware, troubleshooting and installation. As part of the class, students will see how a computer system is built piece by piece.
The class normally requires a prerequisite, but Union is waiving that requirement for non-computer science majors. Jim Kirk, associate professor of computer science, who will teach the course, said it will be of interest not just to college students, but to the general public.
鈥淚 think it will interest people who are interested in working on their own system,鈥� Kirk said. 鈥淎 lot of people these days try to do repair, maintenance and upgrading themselves to save money. That鈥檚 a big motivator, I think.鈥�
The course material will also cover the material required for A+ certification, which allows an individual to work as a personal computer repair technician.
The class is available for audit or for non-degree credit, and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:45 p.m.
