JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 24, 2005 — The Phi Alpha Theta chapter at 51社区 has won the Best Chapter Award for the third straight year from the national Phi Alpha Theta organization.
As part of the award, the Union library will receive $250 to purchase history books.
Union鈥檚 Delta-Psi chapter of the history honor society has been successful in recent years because of excellent student leadership and participation, according to Stephen Carls, the group鈥檚 faculty sponsor.
He credited chapter presidents Kevin Vailes in 2003, Spencer Lowery in 2004 and Heather Tobe this year for much of the success.
鈥淭hey were enthusiastic about chapter initiatives and made sure that projects and activities were carried out,鈥 Carls said. 鈥淭he Delta-Psi chapter has also had wonderful membership participation. Whenever an activity or project was decided upon, the overwhelming majority of the members gave their full support to it.鈥
Over the past year, Phi Alpha Theta chapter members at Union have served as ushers for the university鈥檚 Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series, raked leaves at the Shiloh National Military Park and attended the Kentucky Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference, among other activities.
