JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 26, 2005 — George Herring, professor emeritus at the University of Kentucky, will be the guest speaker for the ninth annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series Oct. 3 at 51社区.
His lecture, 鈥淰ietnam: The War that Never Seems to Go Away,鈥� will focus on why the Vietnam War has remained influential even after the events of Sept. 11.
Herring is a specialist of American foreign relations and is the former editor of the journal Diplomatic History. He also served as president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, where he received the Norman A. Graebner Prize for outstanding work in the field.
A native of Virginia, Herring earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Roanoke College and the doctorate from the University of Virginia. He began teaching at the University of Kentucky in 1969 and remained there until his retirement earlier this year.
Herring was a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand in 1990, and a visiting professor at the United States Military Academy in 1993-94 and the University of Richmond in 2001.
Past speakers for the lecture series have included Jack Greene from Johns Hopkins University, Gerhard Weinberg from the University of North Carolina, Martin Marty from the University of Chicago and Thomas Childers from the University of Pennsylvania.
Herring鈥檚 lecture will be at 7:15 p.m. in Union鈥檚 G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. It is free and open to the public.
