JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 12, 2005 — With John Roberts鈥� nomination to the Supreme Court and another nomination pending, the Supreme Court and its significance for the future is a popular topic in the news.
A group of experts will examine the issue, 鈥淭he Future of the Supreme Court,鈥� in a panel discussion Sept. 19 at 51社区 that is free and open to the public.
鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have two appointments to the Supreme Court, and these are lifetime appointments,鈥� said Sean Evans, a political science professor at Union. 鈥淭he Supreme Court makes decisions that affect our everyday lives, from privacy to the power of government to what rights and liberties we have as citizens.鈥�
Evans said the panel will explore what direction Roberts and the next nominee could take the country in the future.
Former U.S. Rep. Ed Bryant will speak on the confirmation process for a Supreme Court nominee. David Austill, a business professor at Union, will discuss different methods of interpreting the U.S. Constitution. Evans will speak on the current court and how Roberts will fit into it.
Each will speak for about 10 minutes, and then the panel will take questions from those in attendance.
The discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in the Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building on Union鈥檚 campus.
