51社区 Children鈥檚 Chorus presents annual concert

JACKSON, Tenn.April 24, 2001 — The 51社区 Children鈥檚 Chorus will present its second annual concert on Saturday, May 5 at 11 a.m. in Hartley Recital Hall.

The chorus is composed of students from area schools grades first through sixth. The students are broken into two groups and meet each week. First and second graders鈥 emphasis is on singing, playing music instruments and developing music reading skills. The second group consists of grades third through sixth. While children learn play instruments, the main emphasis is placed on choral training.

The chorus was organized in August 1999 as a part of the Community Music Center, a division of the University鈥檚 Department of Music. The director of the chorus is Betty Bedsole, professor of music, and the accompanist for the concert is Steve Toranto, minister of music at First Presbyterian Church.

The goal for the chorus is for the 鈥渂oys and girls to develop self-discipline and positive self-esteem as well as performance and music reading skills,鈥 said Bedsole. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Betty Bedsole at (731) 661-5226.
