JACKSON, Tenn. — May 25, 2005 — A new doctor of education degree in educational leadership will begin this summer at 51社区 for those interested in a career in higher education.
The degree is designed to prepare college and university professionals to serve in leadership positions at colleges and universities. In addition, the degree is also useful for those wishing to pursue a college teaching career or for those who want a doctorate degree for research purposes.
Tom Rosebrough, dean of the College of Education and Human Studies at Union, said the new doctoral degree will be an extension of what Union is already providing for education students.
鈥淭he mission of the education department at 51社区 is to prepare educators of character and competence who reflect Christ as they serve and lead in their schools and communities,鈥� Rosebrough said. 鈥淭he doctor of education degree is guided by the conceptual framework of the Teacher Education Program: a teacher-student dynamic of sensitivity, reflection and faith.鈥�
Courses in the 60-hour degree program will be available in a variety of ways, including campus work, online courses and a mixture of the two.
鈥淲e are offering an innovative delivery combination to ensure personal quality service to students,鈥� said Melinda Clarke, director of the program and an associate professor of education at Union. 鈥淲e want to meet a variety of needs with the program.鈥�
The doctor of education curriculum at Union has three components: leadership issues, leadership practice and leadership research. The program will include such classes as History and Philosophy of Higher Education, Faith and Ethics in Educational Leadership, the American College Student and Research Methods and Design, among others.
Courses such as Engaged Learning and Service Learning are distinctive classes not found in many other institutions. A doctoral research dissertation is also a program requirement.
