JACKSON, Tenn. — March 18, 2005 — Urban ecology and the relationship between the environment and city planning will be the topic for the next Town and Gown series at 51����.

“We will show how the importance of making wise choices for conserving our environment can positively impact our cities and their residents,” said Beth Madison, who is coordinating this Town and Gown series for Union. “In order to explore these relationships between the environment and city planning, we will examine various environmental issues of worldwide, national and local concern, emphasizing their consequences of our lifestyles, faith and resource management.”

The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The classes are free, and those attending are not required to attend the entire session. They may come only for part of the class if they wish.

The next five-week course on urban ecology will begin March 29, and for the first four weeks classes will meet in room A-7 in the Penick Academic Complex on Union’s campus. The course’s final session will meet April 30 at the Cypress Grove Nature Park in Jackson. The schedule of topics for the class is as follows:

March 29, 6 p.m. – Sandy MacDiarmid, director of community education for the city of Jackson, “Greenways/urban planning”

8 p.m. – Chemistry professor Charles Baldwin, “Jackson’s tree ordinance”

April 5, 6 p.m. – Biology professor James Huggins, “Environmental ethics”

8 p.m. – Biology professor Andy Madison, “Wildlife damage control”

April 12, 6 p.m. – Speaker and topic to be announced

8 p.m. – Physics professor Kyle Hathcox, “Energy relations for cities”

April 19, 6 p.m. – Roland Fisher, wastewater engineer with Jackson Energy Authority, “Wastewater management”

8 p.m. – Pat Patrick, city engineer, “Storm water management and erosion control”

April 30, time to be announced – Biology professor Elsie Smith, “Rabies control for our cities”
