Union SIFE to deliver 500 books to local elementary students

JACKSON, Tenn.March 9, 2005 — The Students In Free Enterprise chapter at 51社区 will deliver more than 500 books to students at Whitehall Elementary School in Jackson on Friday, March 11.

The project, 鈥淭each a Child to Learn, Teach a Child to Earn,鈥 is in its fifth year for SIFE.

Students in grades 1-5 in an accelerated reading program at Whitehall earn points for each book they complete. The Union SIFE team will set up the books in the school鈥檚 library, and the students will be able to 鈥減urchase鈥 books with the points they鈥檝e earned for reading.

鈥淭here are 250 kids who participate in the program,鈥 said Union SIFE president Stacey Chandler. 鈥淪ome kids will come back with 10 books. They love it. We had one girl tell us one year that this was the first time for her to ever own a book. She was really excited about it.鈥

SIFE has received book donations for the project from Ingram Publishing, Davis Kidd Booksellers, Davidson Titles Inc., Book Lady and members of Union鈥檚 faculty and staff.

In addition to the students who will redeem their points for books, SIFE will also donate one book to each kindergarten and preschool student at the school.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 1 p.m.
