JACKSON, Tenn. — March 9, 2005 — The Students In Free Enterprise chapter at 51社区 will hold a Brazilian art auction Saturday, April 2, to raise money for a children鈥檚 home in Brazil.
The event is sponsored by Bancorp South and will be held in the lobby of the New Southern Building, 118 E. Baltimore St., in downtown Jackson.
In January, members of Union鈥檚 SIFE team traveled to Recife, Brazil, to teach free enterprise to 50 youth at Vale/Rama Children鈥檚 Home. While there, SIFE members taught the children about global marketing by having them create art pieces to sell in the United States.
Union SIFE students provided art supplies for the orphans to design picture products featuring the theme 鈥淎 Day in Brazil.鈥 The students also made jewelry, decorated sandals with beads and embroidered towels. The children and youth at Vale/Rama will learn how free markets work in a global economy when Union SIFE sells their art pieces and products at the upcoming art auction.
In addition to the 60 pieces of children鈥檚 artwork, the auction will feature 10 pieces from professional artists in Brazil.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. and last until 10 p.m. During the first hour of the event, the children鈥檚 artwork will be displayed along with a photo gallery of Brazil pictures taken by photography major Josh Pettigrew.
The auction for the Brazilian artwork will begin at 8:30 p.m. Throughout the night, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and bid on local donations. Free appetizers and desserts will be served.
Funds raised from the auction will go to the construction of a library for the Vale/Rama Children鈥檚 Home.
SIFE is looking for other local sponsors who would be interested in supporting the art auction. For more information, call Melanie Sobczak at (731) 661-4719.
