JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 6, 2005 — Local residents interested in learning about and discussing the topic of war will have the opportunity to do so at 51����’s next Town and Gown series.

The five-week course entitled “War: Representations and Repercussions” will begin Jan. 11 and will feature lectures from several Union faculty members. The class is free and open to the public. Those attending may listen to lectures and participate in class discussions.

The class will be held each Tuesday night for five weeks, with two lectures each night – one at 6 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. The class will meet in D-3 in the Penick Academic Complex.

The schedule of topics for the class is as follows:

Jan. 11, 6 p.m. – History professor Terry Lindley, “The Changing Face of War in the 20th Century: Tanks, Planes and Submarines”

Jan. 18, 6 p.m. – Biology professor Elsie Smith, “Bio-terrorism”

8 p.m. – Political science professor and former U.S. Representative Ed Bryant, “The Politics of War”

Jan. 25, 6 p.m. – Ann Livingston of the Pearson Peacekeeping Center in Ottawa, Canada, lecture topic to be determined

8 p.m. – Music professor Richard Joiner, “Music of Wartime”

Feb. 1, 6 p.m. – Spanish professor Karen Martin, “Fictions of War”

8 p.m. – Political science professor Kevin Cooney, “War on the Big Screen”

Feb. 8, 6 p.m. – Christian Studies professor Daryl Charles, “The Ethics of War”
