JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 12, 2004 — 51社区鈥檚 student newspaper, the Cardinal & Cream, was the top winner in the awards competition at the Baptist Press Student Journalism Conference held in Nashville Oct. 7-9. A total of 25 awards were received, including many first place awards in various categories.
More than 20 Union students attended the three-day conference and included majors in journalism, public relations, broadcasting and digital media studies. The Cardinal & Cream won the Best Overall Newspaper award, making it the second year in a row to have won the top award for a student newspaper and the third time in the past four years the newspaper was named the best publication.
鈥淚t was a significant event for Union as we showcased our students鈥 outstanding work and the quality of our communication arts program,鈥 said Dr. Michael Chute, associate professor of communication arts and faculty advisor for The Cardinal & Cream. 鈥淢ore than 125 students from 19 colleges and universities attended the conference, and there were more than 250 entries in the awards competition.鈥
Among the schools represented were Baylor University, the University of Alabama, Murray State University, Ouachita Baptist University, Gardner-Webb University, Houston Baptist University, Mississippi State University, Samford University, Campbell, Carson-Newman College and Lee University.
Jill Martin, managing editor of the Cardinal & Cream won the Journalist of the Year award. The criteria for the award is outstanding scholarship, journalism and leadership. She received a $1,000 scholarship and a presidential plaque. 鈥淚t was an honor to be recognized for my work with the Cardinal & Cream,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淲e have an excellent staff who represent some of the best student journalists in the nation.鈥
Photography students won a number of different awards in black and white and color photography. Jon Blair won awards in the categories of news, feature and sports photography. Other awards were garnered in the areas of layout and design, website and yearbook.
鈥淭he results of this awards competition is just one more indication that our communications program at Union is on the right track and moving ahead,鈥 Chute said.
