Union Art Department offers community art classes

JACKSON, Tenn.May 7, 2004 — 51社区 is offering weeklong art workshops throughout the month of June for young artists 4 years old through high school-aged. The first class begins June 7 for students age 4 through kindergarten.

The Summer Art Program is in its sixth year and will explore a multi-cultural theme using various media. Older students will cultivate an appreciation for art through visits to the campus gallery, on-site sculptures and artists鈥 studios. Class size is limited, allowing each student to receive individualized instruction from professional artists and teachers. Tuition fees cover all materials needed for the class.

At the conclusion of the program, students will have created individual works of art, but the program鈥檚 focus is on the process rather than the product.

鈥淚n the process is where they learn,鈥 Debra Tayloe, director of the Community Art Program, said. 鈥淓ventually something comes forth from the process which is pleasing and feels finished to the artist.

鈥淲e bring these students into a hands-on, tactile experience. When you do artwork you forget yourself. I want them to be able to find the joy in making and doing with their hands, which gives a wonderful sense of completeness,鈥 Tayloe said.

To register for classes or to find out more information about the schedule, contact the art department at (731) 661-5076.
