JACKSON, Tenn. — April 1, 2004 — Lartanyia Merriweather of Jackson and Sarah Bradley of Lawrenceburg are the recipients of the first social work scholarship awards at 51社区.
This year the social work department created and awarded two new scholarships: the Phoenix Award and the 2004 Student Social Work Award. Funds raised from events such as Social Work Awareness Day contributed to these awards. The scholarships were presented at the annual social work workshop.
Merriweather, a sophomore social work major, received both scholarships. The Student Social Work Award was shared with Bradley, a junior majoring in social work.
The Phoenix Award was an essay competition. The theme this year was the same as that of the workshop, 鈥淔lying with Broken Wings: Intergenerational Trauma in the Lives of Girls and Women.鈥� Those who entered had to write about the role of social workers in society.
鈥淟artanyia wrote a wonderful essay about how social workers empower people to deal with difficulties and move on,鈥� Mary Ann Poe, associate professor of social work, said. Of Bradley, Poe said, 鈥淪arah is an excellent student. She is academic, thoughtful and well-deserving of the scholarship assistance.鈥�
