JACKSON, Tenn. — March 23, 2001 — On April 5, 2001 a group of nurses and nursing students from 51社区 will embark upon a journey to Guiamaca, Honduras to improve the healthcare at the Emmanuel Orphanage while spreading the word of God during the trip.
The trip is part of Union鈥檚 Global opportunities week and has been made possible by the work of Todd Brady, minister to the University, Susan Jacob, dean of the school of nursing, and Sandra Kirkland, associate professor of nursing.
鈥淲e wouldn鈥檛 been able to do this if Todd Brady had not approached Susan Jacob. This is a huge opportunity for not only our nursing program but also our nursing students,鈥� said Kirkland.
The nursing team is comprised of two students in the nursing administration graduate track, Charlene Blanchard and Karla Coleman; two undergraduate students, Sara Vick and Jaime Schwitzer; one RN-BSN completion students, Deborah Thompson; and one faculty member, Dr. Sandra Kirkland, associate professor of nursing.
The nursing team will not only nurses to the children, but will also serve as mentors as they teach the children the importance of healthy living. The team is preparing both physically and spiritually. They are also reviewing their Spanish vocabulary to better communicate with the children.
