PBS affiliate to air Union Christmas program

JACKSON, Tenn.Dec. 9, 2003 — 51社区's annual classical Christmas concert will be aired throughout the holiday season on WLJT, a regional affiliate of the Public Broadcasting System.

"A Union Christmas" will be aired on Dec. 23 at 9 p.m., Dec. 26 at 8 p.m., and Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. on WLJT, cable channel 11 in Jackson. The performed was taped on Dec. 2 and featured more than 140 singers and musicians from the department of music.

The concert will feature performances from the university's Choral Union, Proclamation, Children's Choir, Union Singers, and the Union Symphonic Band. The event was conducted by Richard Joiner, chair of the department of music.

The works of 20th century composer Benjamin Britten were performed during the concert, attended by about 600 people.

The show was taped by an 8-person film crew headed by Dave Hinman, general manager of WLJT.

"We were delighted to join 51社区 in the celebration of Christmas through song and Bible readings," Hinman said. "We look forward to making this program available to all of west Tennessee as a special edition of the West Tennessee Journal television show."

David S. Dockery, president of the university, expressed his appreciation for WLJT's efforts.

"We are indeed grateful to WLJT for their support of the Union Christmas program," Dockery said. "We are thankful for their efforts to expand the impact and influence of the bearutiful Christmas music across West Tennessee during this holiday season."
