Harvard professor to speak in Savage Chapel

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 8, 2003 — Charles S. Maier, the Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History at Harvard University, will speak at 51社区 on Oct. 21 as the 2003 Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecturer. Maier will discuss "An American Empire? Imperial Histories and Their Lessons."

Maier will also present an afternoon lecture discussing the definition of global history.

The lectures are free and open to the public.

Maier is considered a specialist in twentieth-century European and world history. He has written extensively on subjects ranging from the world wars to the Holocaust. Maier is working on a history of the twentieth-century world with William Kirby of Harvard University. He has received a number of awards and grants during his career including the Commander's Cross and the Order of Merit from the German Federal Republic.

Maier is the winner of the American Historical Association's George Louis Beer Prize and the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize for his book "Recasting Bourgeois Europe."
