JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 30, 2003 — The Hammons Charitable Foundation presented a $102,000 check to 51社区 President David S. Dockery to be allocated for recipients of the Hammons Scholarship. The presentation was made during a special Sept. 30 luncheon honoring the Hammons Scholars.
Dockery received the check from David Moore, president of the Arkansas Baptist Foundation and a Hammons Charitable Foundation board member. Board member James Dean, pastor of First Baptist Church, Forrest City, Ark., was also present.
The Foundation also presented a $200,000 grant to be used in funding the Roy L. White Hall Science Building.
The Hammons Foundation was established in 1996 to support West Tennessee and East Arkansas students seeking to attend Christian colleges. Students who are selected to receive a scholarship, receive funding for their freshman and sophomore year with gifts ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
Since 2000, the Foundation has provided more than $1.7 million in support to the university. Two hundred Union students have received nearly $731,000 in scholarships from the Foundation. Among the projects funded through the Foundation鈥檚 generosity are Hammons Hall, the grand pianos in Jennings Hall, the Hammons Technology Center and the O.P. and Evalyn Hammons University Professor of Pre-Medical Studies.

Hammons was a man with a large vision for the importance of Christian higher education and a generous heart to match. Union has been blessed by his kindness and that of the Foundation that carries forth his legacy.鈥�
Hammons, a longtime supporter and trustee of the university, died at the age of 57 in 1998. He was a committed Christian and an active member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn.
