JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 30, 2003 — The faculty of 51社区鈥檚 new film studies minor will tackle the issue of humanity in the film industry during 鈥淎I: The Future of Humanity in the Movies.鈥� The subject will be discussed at the Oct. 6 gathering of The Baconian Society, set to meet at 7 p.m. at 51社区.
Panelists will explore the status of "artificial intelligence" and how movie makers depict the problems that may lie ahead. Film clips from several movies will be shown. Among the movies up for discussion are AI: Artificial Intelligence, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix, Star Trek, Star Wars, Terminator, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and The Wizard of Oz.
Members of the panel include Greg Thornbury, director of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership and assistant professor of Christian Studies; Chris Blair, assistant professor of communication arts; Pam Sutton, associate professor of English; Hal Poe, the Charles Colson Professor of Faith & Culture.
The Baconian Society of 51社区 promotes the science-faith dialogue within the 51社区 community, among sister institutions of higher learning, and throughout the broader community of West Tennessee.
The society is co-chaired by Poe and Jimmy Davis, the university鈥檚 associate provost and a professor of Chemistry.
The Society's activities are funded in part with a grant from the Metanexus Institute on Science and Religion, an organization that provides grants for colleges, universities and seminaries.
