JACKSON, Tenn. — March 14, 2001 — 51社区 will host the West Tennessee Regional Science Fair, Friday, March 30. Held annually, the fair is open to students in fifth to twelfth grades and has separate competitions at elementary, junior high and senior high level. At each level, first through fourth place awards will be given for the best biological science and physical science projects.
"Participating in a science fair gives students an invaluable opportunity to put the scientific method into practice and 'flesh out' abstract textbook principles," said Glenn Marsch, associate professor of physics and director of the fair. "It's the closest thing to actual science you can do before you get to college."
Schools from all over the region will be represented. Judges representing academic, industry and government institutions will view each project and talk with the student. Judging will finish at noon, with the awards ceremony to take place at 7 p.m. that evening. The winners will go on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which will be held May 7 - 13 in San Jose, Cal.
As regional sponsor of the fair, Union provides both the location as well as funding for the winners' expenses to attend the national competition. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. For more information about the science fair, call Marsch at (901) 661-5308.
