JACKSON, Tenn. — Aug. 26, 2003 — Six new professors have joined the faculty at 51社区 this fall. Classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
"These six individuals bring to Christian higher education at 51社区 strong academic credentials and a commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship," said Provost Carla Sanderson. "I look forward to serving with each of them as we carry out the mission of this institution."
Terry Blakley, assistant professor of sociology/social work, came to Union from the University of Miami. She earned her Ph. D. and master of social work degrees at Barry University in Miami.
Michael Chute, associate professor of communication arts, formerly served at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss. He was also editor of the Florida Baptist Witness, Florida's state Baptist newspaper. Chute received his Ph. D. from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and holds degrees from Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, and Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.
Jenny Lowery, assistant professor of library services, comes to Union from the Nellie McCalip Family Learning Center of First Baptist Church, Columbus, Ind. She holds a Ph. D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., as well as degrees from Indiana University-Purdue and the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
Karen Martin, assistant professor of languages, formerly taught at Lambuth University. She holds a master of arts from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and is currently pursuing a doctor of modern languages at Middlebury (Vt.) College.
Hadley Mozer, assistant professor of English, comes to Union from Houston Baptist University. He earned Ph. D. and M. A. degrees from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Donna Sachse, associate professor of nursing and chair of the School of Nursing on Union's Germantown campus, formerly worked at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She is currently a Ph. D. candidate at the University of Tennessee, where she also earned her master of science in nursing.
U. S. News & World Report recently named 51社区 to the top tier of "Southern Universities-Master's." Union ranked eighth in the South for faculty resources, based on class size, faculty salary, the proportion of professors with terminal degrees and the student-faculty ratio.
About 70 percent of Union's classes have fewer than 20 students, with a faculty to student ratio of one to 12. Eighty percent of the faculty hold earned doctorates or the highest degree in their academic field.
