JACKSON, Tenn.July 17, 2003 — The Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary was awarded the Evangelical Christian Publisher's Association Gold Medallion for Reference Works and Commentaries in a ceremony July 12 in Orlando. George H. Guthrie, Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible and Chair of the Department of Christian Studies at 51社区, authored the commentary's section on the book of Hebrews.

"George Guthrie is recognized as the premier scholar in the country on the book of Hebrews," said Union President David S. Dockery. "I am excited for him and thankful for the tremendous contribution that this new work will make."

"From the beginning, I felt the Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary was going to be uniquely useful to those doing Bible study and teaching in the local church," said Guthrie. "Insight into cultural, social, and material background issues really brings the New Testament alive, turning our understanding of the text from 'black and white' to 'full color.' I am grateful the quality of the project has been recognized."

Guthrie is the author of The Structure of Hebrews: A Text-Linguistic Analysis, the NIV Application Commentary Hebrews, and Biblical Greek Exegesis (with J. Scott Duvall). His commentary on James will appear in the updated Expositors Bible Commentary, and he is currently developing commentaries on 2 Corinthians and Philippians for Baker Book House and Zondervan Publishers, respectively.

Guthrie has served as a translator for the upcoming revised New Living Translation and as a consultant on the English Standard Version and the Holman Christian Standard Version of the Bible. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal for New Testament Studies Supplement Series and has just completed a term on the executive committee of the Institute for Biblical Research.

The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association is an international not-for-profit trade organization composed of 280 companies. The Gold Medallion Book Awards were established in 1978 to recognize quality in Christian books. Entries are submitted by publishers and judged by a panel of Christian retailers.
