JACKSON, Tenn. — June 27, 2003 — In an effort to meet the needs of non-traditional and working engineering students, 51社区 will launch Engineering Foundations this fall.
Built on a "cohort" model, in which a small group of students attends courses together for the duration of the program, Engineering Foundations will provide late afternoon and evening sections of engineering prerequisites in mathematics, computer programming and science. Upon completion of the program, students may continue engineering studies and earn a bachelor of science in engineering (BSE) degree.
Designed primarily for individuals who have a bachelor's degree in another field but have chosen a career in engineering, the Engineering Foundations cohort will complete one or two courses per semester over a three-year period. The BSE cohort will take two courses per semester over a five-year period to earn the degree.
"Two years ago, 51社区 launched the engineering program in order to meet the needs of individuals and businesses in our community," said Don Van, chair of Union's Department of Engineering. "This program will expand that effort by providing the opportunity for men and women who are working full-time to earn an engineering degree."
"The Foundations program and the BSE are long-term commitments," said Van, "but the benefits of this education to the students, their employers, and West Tennessee will last decades."
