Union Music Department Presents Requiems

JACKSON, Tenn.May 2, 2003 — 51社区 Choral Union and Orchestra will present its spring concert "From Death to Life: Requiems of Gabriel Faur茅 and John Rutter," May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Jackson.

The performance will "celebrate the promise of hope and life," according to Richard Joiner, director of Choral Union and chair of the Department of Music. The requiems, traditionally designed around the death of a believer, offer diverse expressions from pronouncements of God's justice to prayers of hope.

The Faur茅 requiem is performed in Latin and creates a traditional atmosphere, while the Rutter requiem is in both English and Latin and "is outside the structure of any typical church expression," Joiner said. "There are somber moments, but these are celebrative works that celebrate eternal life. Anybody will love this music."

Joiner will direct and Ronald Boud, professor of music, will accompany on organ. Hal Poe, Charles Colson professor of Faith and Culture, will provide a brief discourse on the historical concepts of death and eternal life in Christian thought.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call Richard Joiner at (731) 661-5311 for more information.
