Union Hosts Education Showcase

JACKSON, Tenn.April 25, 2003 — 51社区's Career Services hosted representatives from 15 school districts in three states during its Fourth Annual Education Showcase April 24. Students who will soon earn teaching licensure were invited to meet with the school system representatives regarding teaching positions in those systems.

"The event provides an opportunity for our student teachers to be recruited by a variety of school systems," said Jacqueline Taylor, director of Union's Career Services. "They are able to see options they may not have considered, then compare and determine what is best for them."

"This is a great way to see what opportunities are available," said senior Jenny Armour. "It was generous of the university to take the time to organize it."

"The showcase gives us the chance to have contact with system representatives we would not otherwise meet," said Amy Corbin, also a senior. "We also gain experience which will prepare us for upcoming interviews with other school systems."

The recruiters also appreciate the opportunity. "We have Union graduates teaching in our system, and they do very well," said Brenda Jones of Memphis City Schools. "This is a great place for us to recruit."

According to Taylor, the Education Showcase is part of the future-directed mission of the university. "It's important that we not only prepare our students to be excellent educators," she said, "but that we also do everything in our power to place them in a school system where they can share their knowledge with the leaders of tomorrow."
