JACKSON, Tenn. — April 24, 2003 — Four 51社区 students recently received Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) for items in the 2002 edition of The Torch, Union's annual magazine of student art and literature.
Senior Ryan Schunemann took First Place in Single Illustration Rendering of Photographic Material for Magazines for his work Time for Healing. Recent graduates Jonathan Gillette and Drew Porter earned Third Place in Magazine Spot Color Cover Design.
Joanna Stillman, a senior, received Third Place in Open (Free) Form Poetry for her poem "The Kingfisher," and senior Rebecca Phillips picked up a Certificate of Merit in Experimental Fiction for her story "Reservation."
Items from The Torch competed against more than 3700 works from students at universities such as Vanderbilt, Cal State-Fullerton and the University of Michigan. This is the fourth consecutive year items from The Torch have received awards in the competition.
"The writing and art produced at Union can compete with any student work in the country," said Bobby Rogers, associate professor of English and faculty sponsor of The Torch. "I have always been impressed with the level of talent in the students that Union attracts. It is gratifying to see them rewarded year after year by the CSPA."
The CSPA's Gold Circle Awards program recognizes individual achievement by student writers, editors, designers and photographers.
