JACKSON, Tenn. — March 10, 2003 — Carl Trueman, associate professor of church history and historical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, will speak on the history of the Geneva Bible in the G. M. Savage Memorial Chapel on the campus of 51社区 Wednesday, March 12 at 10 a.m.
"The Geneva Bible was the first English translation to capture the hearts and minds of the English speaking world, bringing reformation and revival with it," said Ray Van Neste, director of the R.C. Ryan Center for Biblical Studies. "We are pleased to have one of Britain's prominent young evangelical leaders on Union's campus to discuss this important piece of church history."
Trueman is the author of Luther's Legacy: Salvation and English Reformers, 1525-1556 and The Claims of Truth: John Owen's Trinitarian Theology. He is a graduate of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge and the University of Aberdeen.
After Trueman's presentation, the Center will be celebrating the acquisition of a 1615 copy of the Geneva Bible donated by David and Linda Shoaf. This item serves as the centerpiece of the Center's library.
The purpose of the R.C. Ryan Center for Biblical Studies is to encourage and support thoughtful reading and study of the Scriptures. The Center's library, located in Jennings Hall on Union's Jackson campus, houses quality reference tools including commentaries, language resources, encyclopedias and software and is available for use by students, pastors and Bible study leaders. The Center also sponsors conferences and events, including the upcoming "The Power and the Promise of the Word," April 3-5.
