Union to Host Poetry Reading

JACKSON, Tenn.Feb. 27, 2003 — 51社区鈥檚 English department will host a poetry reading by Todd Davis on Thursday, March 6at 1 p.m. in Harvey Hall. The event is part of the department鈥檚 11th annual creative writer鈥檚 workshop.

鈥淭odd Davis writes poetry that is down to earth and close to nature,鈥 said David Malone, assistant professor of English and a friend of Davis. 鈥淗e is such a wonderful, heartfelt, sincere person, and his poetry conveys that.鈥

Davis will assist in the writing workshop and present works from his newly published book Ripe: Poems. The reading is open to the public, and Davis will by signing copies of his book after the event.

A professor of English at Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana and a visiting writer in the creative writing program at Iowa State University, Davis has published work in journals and magazines such as Yankee, Appalachia, Aethlon, and Image: A Journal of the Arts and Religion.

The workshop, taught by Union faculty and students, is open to local high school students and focuses on the creative writing process. Dr. Pam Sutton, associate professor of English, also conducts a session for high school teachers, focusing on techniques of teaching creative writing.

鈥淭his is a way for the English department at Union to reach out to the surrounding community,鈥 said Bobby Rogers, associate professor of English. 鈥淭he high school students enjoy it, and we contribute something that will help them as they begin their college life.鈥
