51社区 service day honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 20, 2003 — On Monday, 51社区 observed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by serving two community agencies. Members of the Union family spent the day at Area Relief Ministries and The Care Center, both in downtown Jackson.

In previous years, 51社区 has celebrated the holiday with a special worship service attended by Union family and members of the community. This year's commemoration stems from the desire to help the community in a tangible way.

"Instead of taking the day off," said university president David Dockery, "we believe spending time in service to others is an appropriate way to honor the spirit of King's life and work."

Dr. King's efforts served as inspiration for the group. "He was relentless, and this day is a reminder of how important it is to do something tangible about the predicaments of real people," said Jay Ridenour, Union's Director of Discipleship Ministries. "Today we're working for the glory of God in honor of Dr. King."

The Care Center is a shelter for abused or homeless women and children, and Area Relief Ministries seeks to provide for a variety of needs among Jackson's working poor.

Both organizations were happy to have the help. "They did a wonderful job. I'll take them back anytime," said Nathan Young, Care Center director. "We can always use volunteers," said Chanda Freeman, Director of Client Services at Area Relief Ministries.
