JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 17, 2003 — On Monday, Jan. 20, faculty, staff and students from 51社区 will have the opportunity to help out in the Jackson community. They will be doing so in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., on the holiday celebrating the influential civil rights movement leader.
There will be three different areas that the Union family will have to choose from in order to serve. The first option will be to work at The Care Center, which provides help for the homeless in Jackson, with cleaning and organizing. The second option will be to help clean up and paint Greater Hope Baptist Church, a church that many students from Union attend. The third option will be to help out with Area Relief Missions, doing clerical work and putting together service guides for the community.
This is a change from Union鈥檚 previous Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations, which have been special worship services included in the January chapel program that both Union family and people from the community attended. This year鈥檚 commemoration stems from the desire to help the community in a tangible way.
