JACKSON, Tenn. — Dec. 12, 2002 — 51社区 has announced a new scholarship program which will benefit minority students. Union freshmen Sheketa Williams and Anthony James, both from Northside High School in Jackson, are the first two recipients of the scholarship.
Chosen from 28 students who were eligible for the new award, Williams, a pre-professional studies of biology major and James, a political science major, placed first and second place respectively in the competition.
First place winnings total $8,000 for four years and second place winnings total $4,000 for four years. The initial scholarship money was provided by Carroll and Kay Griffin of Jackson and Ernest and Jacqueline Taylor of Wildersville, Tenn.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funds to deserving African-American men and women who need financial assistance and want to pursue a Christian college education at 51社区.
African-American students applying to 51社区 for the 2003-2004 academic year are encouraged to request scholarship information from the Office of Scholarship/Financial Aid at Union concerning this new scholarship. The application deadline is Feb. 17, 2003. Any interested high school seniors should contact the Financial Aid Office at (731) 661-5015 for more information.
