51社区 students return to classes Tuesday - Union community participates in clean-up

JACKSON, Tenn.Nov. 11, 2002 — Classes will be back in session at 8 a.m. at 51社区 tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 12 after a day off due to the damage the campus experienced from the tornadic activity late Saturday evening and students may return to the campus tonight. This includes all undergraduate and graduate, day and evening classes.

After an 18-hour power outage, all power and water has been restored to residence life for the campus. Exams scheduled for Tuesday have been moved to Thursday, Nov. 14th. The faculty will work with students in re-calendaring other assignments.

Faculty, staff and students have all pitched in for a campus work day, clearing away debris, tree limbs and broken glass across the campus. Assessments are still being made on the extent of structural damage to several buildings. More than 500 cars which were in the parking lots are estimated to have been damaged from the storm.

Help from the local community continues to pour in, with individuals and businesses donating food, cleaning supplies and equipment. Insurance companies are onsite to assist students with making claims for automobile damages.

The university is asking that all companies or vendors wanting to help must check in with the administration at the Watters commons area. They are not to approach students or their cars or other property with business cards or soliciting material without permission from the university.

More complete information will follow in the hours and days to come. For updates and pictures, go to www.uu.edu.
