Musicale to commemorate Rodgers 100th birthday

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 29, 2002 — 51社区鈥檚 Gamma Sigma chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional music fraternity, will honor the 100th anniversary of the birthday of legendary musician and composer Richard Rodgers with a musicale performance. All music for the evening will come from his works and will be held in Hartley Recital Hall in Jennings Hall on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:30 p.m.

Rodgers, who was born in 1902, wrote his first professional score at the age of 18 with Lorenz Hart titled 鈥淧oor Little Ritz Girl.鈥 At the time of Rodgers鈥 death on December 30, 1979, it is estimated that between the 40 Broadway musicals, one Broadway play, three London musicals, 10 film musicals, two television musicals, two television documentaries, one night club revue, and one ballet that he worked on, the total number of performances came to 18,126 鈥 or 43 陆 years 鈥 including revivals. His most well-known works come from his partnership with Oscar Hammerstein II, with whom he wrote such works as The King and I, Oklahoma, Carousel, and South Pacific among others.
