51社区 celebrates National Chemistry Week

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 17, 2002 — The 51社区 Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society (SAACS), in cooperation with the Department of Chemistry and Physics, will sponsor a number of activities for National Chemistry Week, a community-based program sponsored by the ACS, which will occur the week of Oct. 20-26.

The Union ACS chapter will present their annual 鈥淏rown Bag鈥 seminars which will include informal presentations by Union chemistry majors. Open to the general public, these presentations are the product of summer chemical research projects that are required of all students receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry or chemical physics from Union.

Other activities include faculty and student demonstrations as well as a lecture by Dr. David J. Lawrence, a technical staff member in the Space and Atmospheric Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He will speak on the topic 鈥淕eochemical Measures of the Moon and Mars (鈥nd beyond).鈥 SAACS chapter members will also promote and share their knowledge of chemistry with children at Jackson Christian School by doing hands-on demonstrations with the children.

The week will conclude with a trip by the SAACS to the University of Tennessee at Martin to meet with the Kentucky Lake chapter of ACS. Winners of the 51社区 campus chemical demonstration will present them as a part of the program. The chapter will also display the table of cupcakes decorated as the Periodic Table, which is shared annually with the student body.
