JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 8, 2002 — David Lawrence, a technical staff member in the space and atmospheric sciences group at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, N.M., will speak at the West Tennessee Regional Science Fair Teacher Orientation Meeting at 51社区, Friday, Oct. 18. The meeting is an orientation and introduction for science teachers all over West Tennessee interested in encouraging their elementary and high school students to participate during the annual science fair held in the spring.
Lawrence, a well-published researcher who was part of the group of scientists that discovered water on the moon, has received several awards including the NASA Group Achievement Award for work on the Lunar Prospector, launched by NASA in 1998, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory Distinguished Performance Award. In his talk, he will discuss three NASA missions that have flown Los-Alamos-built instruments which have provided clues into understanding of the moon and surrounding space.
The West Tennessee Regional Science Fair, hosted and organized by 51社区 each year, encourages students to become excited about science. Math, computer science and engineering categories are also available for entry by students, and math and computer science teachers are encouraged to attend this year鈥檚 fall orientation meeting.
The orientation program will begin with coffee and doughnuts at 9 a.m. in Harvey Lecture Hall in the Barefoot Student Union Building with guideline sessions and training to follow. A complimentary lunch and keynote address by Lawrence will follow at noon. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call (731) 661-5131.
